2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Trim Levels

The Santa Fe has been the midsize crossover offering of South Korean automaker Hyundai since the 2001 model year. Three production cycles later, Hyundai unleashed the nameplate's fourth-gen model with its 2019 version. Completely redesigned, the Santa Fe is the recipient of an enviable suite of standard safety features. The 2019 Santa Fe is split into four major trim levels: SE, SEL (which comprises the SEL and SEL Plus), Limited, and Ultimate.

Hyundai Santa Fe SE

The SE trim level of the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is powered by the Theta II, which is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) that generates 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. This engine has idle stop-and-go technology, which eliminates idling (thus the name) by automatically stopping the engine when you come to a complete stop and automatically restarts it when it's time to resume driving to avoid unnecessary fuel burning. The engine is glued to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, although you have the option of swapping it with an all-wheel drivetrain. With front-wheel drive, the SE gets 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. With all-wheel drive, those numbers are reduced to 21 mpg and 27 mpg, respectively, although you will get considerably improved traction performance. Inside the Santa Fe, the cabin provides two rows of seats to accommodate up to five occupants. Passenger volume is measured at 146.6 cubic feet.

Cargo volume on the crossover is measured at 35.9 cubic feet, and you can fold down the rear seats to expand it to 71.3 cubic feet. Cloth upholstery and a 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat with 2-way power lumbar support are standard. For comfort and convenience, the SE provides features such as smart cruise control, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a monochromatic multi-information display (MID), six-speaker audio, four USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, and a 7-inch audio display. For safety, the SE starts with six airbags (dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side-curtain airbags), a rearview camera, vehicle stability control, hill start assist control, blind-spot collision avoidance with rear cross-traffic alert, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, driver attention warning, and an anti-theft system that combines the aforementioned remote keyless entry with a panic alarm. If you choose the all-wheel drivetrain instead of sticking with the standard front-wheel drive, you will have the option of adding downhill brake control.

Hyundai Santa Fe SEL

At the SEL trim level, the driver's seat is upgraded with 8-way power adjustability, and both front seats have heating capability. For comfort and convenience, this trim level is boosted with a larger, 7-inch TFT LCD color MID and a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. Also added is the Blue Link telematics system, which consists of three-year trial subscriptions to the Connected Care package (which provides services such as automatic collision notification, enhanced roadside assistance, vehicle health reporting, and SOS emergency assistance) and Remote package (which provides services such as stolen vehicle recovery, remote door lock/unlock, alarm notification, and remote start with climate control). The SEL Plus variant takes the upgrades and additions several steps further: with dual front automatic climate control, a garage-door opener, an automatic-dimming rearview mirror, and a 12-speaker Infinity surround-sound system. Regarding safety, this trim level gets parking distance warning added on the Santa Fe, as well as engine immobilization to beef up the anti-theft system.

Hyundai Santa Fe Limited

Upgrading to the Limited trim level provides the opportunity of going with the smaller yet more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 version of the Theta II engine. This workhorse, which is represented by the suffix "2.0T" (i.e., Limited 2.0T) generates 235 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and it also comes with idle stop-and-go technology. Paired with this engine, fuel economy is 20/25 mpg with front-wheel drive and 19/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. At this trim level, the front passenger seat gets 8-way power adjustability.

Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate

Like the Limited, the Ultimate offers the choice of the 2.0T engine (i.e., Ultimate 2.0T). However, it stands apart from the Limited-as well as the other two trim levels-with its front-seat ventilation, driver-seat memory system and leg cushion extensions, rear-seat heating, a heads-up display to reduce distraction when driving, 8-inch touchscreen navigation, wireless device charging, and a surround-view camera that replaces the rearview camera.
