2016 Hyundai Tucson – Matthews, NC
A far as compact crossovers go, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson in Charlotte, NC is a hard vehicle to beat in this segment. It’’s sporting an impressive exterior design, and has both advanced performance and safety features on board. On top of all that, it’s won multiple awards for 2016, such as being an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ of 2016, and Motorweek Driver’s Choice of 2016. These awards combined with the overall exceptional quality of this compact crossover truly put it ahead of the competition, and make it a vehicle that’s hard for other non-compact crossover SUVs to beat in general.
The styling of the Tucson was led by Hyundai’s Frankfurt, Germany design center and the Tucson’s European origins are very evident in this design. The aggressive and stable stance, prominent hexagonal-shaped grille, sleek and efficient LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights come together to create a unique and strong crossover design.
The headlights and grille sit below a sculpted and powerful hood, which leads up to a sweeping windshield with a simple arching roofline. A character line runs down the side of the vehicle through the door handles, and greets the wrap-around taillights. Which helps segue the rear-end into the rest of the design, and the back happens to be just as interesting as the front. Unlike other cars, the Tucson features rear exterior details that aids the rest of the design. Twin, bevel-cut chrome exhaust tips sit flush with the rear-bumper. The spoiler that sits on top of the back window sticks out to add some contrast to the angled and rounded-out hatch.
Overall, the design is one that’s dynamic, has plenty of definition, muscle, and style to separate itself from the rest of the segment.
The Tucson offers two engine choices: a 2.0-liter or 1.6-liter. Both engines provide power and efficiency thanks to Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is found on the base SE trim, and provides 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired to either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, and the fuel economy changes accordingly. On a FWD model with this engine, the Tucson gets 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, and 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway with AWD. This engine comes paired to a standard six-speed automatic transmission.
On the Eco, Sport, and Limited trims, the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder generates 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. These trims are also available in either FWD or AWD models, and the Tucson returns an impressive 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway when equipped with FWD. The AWD model gets 25 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The impressive efficiency? That’s also in part because the seven-speed EcoShift Dual-Clutch transmission delivers smooth shifts and efficient performance. It’s an automated manual transmission, which means it works just like a regular automatic.
While the performance of the base engine is impressive, the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine is even more striking. The fact it’s able to put out more horsepower and torque, while still getting better fuel economy than the base engine is a testament to the turbocharged technology. Not to mention, having close to 200 lb-ft of torque in a compact crossover SUV this size is sure to make tires squeal when you hit the brakes.
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is raising the standard of safety. Not only with its six airbags, active front head restraints and electronic stability control, but also its advanced safety features like Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Lane Change Assist.
Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Assist
The Lane Departure Warning system is Hyundai’s way of helping drivers maintain vehicle control and lane position if you are being inattentive at the wheel. If the Tucson detects that you are drifting out of your lane without signaling, it will provide an audible warning to help get you back on track again.
Lane Change Assist is a system that measures the closing speed of an approaching vehicle in the adjacent lane. So even if you do intend to change your lane, the Tucson will be able to determine if it’s safe to change lanes or not. If it isn’t, it will provide you with a visual and audible warning.
Automatic Emergency Braking
This system can detect any vehicles using camera and radar that might be driven by absent-minded people in the path of the Tucson. If it ends up detecting a vehicle in its path, the Tucson can automatically apply the brakes from zero-50 mph. That way, even if someone cuts out in front of you on a main road, the Tucson can still hit the brakes if you don’t have time to.
Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
Blind Spot Detection is an available radar-based system that detects when a vehicle is in your blind spot, and provides both an audible and visual alert so you don’t merge into a vehicle coming up behind you.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
This system is engaged when reverse is selected, and uses radar to detect if there are any vehicles crossing from the right or left behind the vehicle. A system like this is helpful in crowded parking lots, or even when backing out from your driveway onto a busy road. Just like the other systems, it will provide a warning if a vehicle is detected on either side.
Clearly, these are all systems that Hyundai has designed with a purpose to help the driver combat the more common real world situations that might be experienced on the road — and they are all effective.
