2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
The 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a crossover SUV that’s more compact than its big brother the Santa Fe. The difference between the two lies in passenger volume, and while the Santa Fe can seat 6-7 passengers, the Sport only seats 5 comfortably. But, that doesn’t mean it lacks a spacious interior. The stylish exterior and interior is still well-suited to an average size family looking for the space an SUV provides, just in a smaller frame. This crossover also sports an abundance of features that range from convenience to safety, which (along with it’s stylish exterior) is something that sets it apart from the rest of the crossover SUVs on the road.

A Sporty, Sleek Style
A Handsome and Efficient Exterior
The design remains unchanged from the 2015 model, and that’s okay. Since it’s redesign, the outside of the Sport is still an eye-catching greeting point for consumers. It has sharp edges that combine with tight contours in order to neatly tie its compact design together; and the simple but handsome grille sits at the forefront of this design; with sweeping, angular headlights and foglights spaced evenly on both sides of it.
Overall, the exterior design provides a modern, effective, and aerodynamic approach to the crossover SUV bracket. It provides the Sport with a design that’s just unique enough to make it stand out, but still simple enough to let consumers know it is practical as well.
A Stylish and Spacious Interior
The 2016 Santa Fe Sport easily boasts one of the nicest interiors for an affordable crossover. Just like the exterior of the Santa Fe Sport, the inside is contemporary, stylish, and well thought out. The first thing one might notice is the above-average quality of material for a crossover in this price range, which is a welcomed surprise. These high-quality materials are trimmed in two-tone colors, and create a sense of upscale luxury that’s lacking in most crossovers.
Even the switches are all well-organized and legible, and the touch screen menu and overall functionality is, again, impressive for a crossover at this price.
The main appeal of a crossover is it provides consumers with a vehicle that has the space and utility of a big SUV in a smaller and more manageable frame — which the Sport does exceptionally well. For the space and utility of the Sport, it all starts with the seating. The Sport has a standard seating arrangement that provides ample headroom, legroom, and storage space for a family of five.
With the rear seats up, the Sport provides a generous 35.4 cubic feet. If one needs more space, however, it is possible to fold the 40/20/40 split rear-folding seats for longer objects. When they are folded down, the Sport provides the driver with more than 71 cubic feet of storage space, which is right up there with the CR-V and RAV4 segment leaders. Proving to the world that even if it doesn’t have the same amount of space as the standard Santa Fe model, it still has enough.
Even if you just need space for a longer object with four passengers, folding down just the rear middle seat is possible thanks to the 40/20/40 design. Providing even greater utility to the Santa Fe Sport is the clever storage space below the cargo floor, which means the interior has more space than one would initially think.
An Abundance of Features
For a crossover with a starting MSRP of $26,000, the 2016 Santa Fe Sport has an abundance of entertainment, convenience, and safety features. Just like the above-average quality materials used to inspire an upscale interior, and the stylish exterior design that belies its low price, Hyundai surprised everyone with the amount of standard and optional features available for the money./p>
All the features on the 2016 Santa Fe Sport are power-operated, adding an exceptional level of convenience.
The Santa Fe Sport has one primary entertainment feature: the sound system. This sound system has Bluetooth with audio streaming, and comes standard with six speakers. It has AM/FM radio, as well as Sirius XM satellite radio with auxiliary and USB capabilities.
As an optional upgrade for the base trim, the technology package adds an HD radio with an in-house Dimension audio sound system with 10 speakers.
Note that 2.0T trim gets a powerful 550-watt 12-speaker infinity system standard. This system with crystal-clear sound is also optional on the base trim for a little more money.
Comfort and Convenience
Along with being space and utility oriented, the interior of the Santa Fe Sport is also focused on comfort and convenience. The features that come standard on the Sport are air conditioning and a steering wheel with mounted audio/phone controls, which is of tilt-and-telescoping design.
Grab the optional leather/premium package, and a power operated driver’s seat is added, which adjusts multiple ways. It also upgrades the second-row seating to heated ones with a slide-and-recline feature that can slide 5.7 inches total, making it much easier to get in and out of the back. This package also adds an intuitive 4.3-inch touchscreen, proximity-based keyless entry, and push button start.
If that wasn’t enough, a panoramic sunroof (with a sliding fabric shade) is also rolled in to provide a more open feeling inside the cabin. You can also opt for the available navigation system, heated steering wheel, and sunshades for rear passenger windows.
One thing the Santa Fe Sport has plenty of is safety features, making it one of the more impressive crossovers in this segment.
The Santa Fe Sport comes standard with front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag, all designed to ensure protection from impact no matter what angle it comes from. This crossover also comes standard with active front head restraints, a hill-holder/hill descent control feature, antilock disc brakes, and traction and stability control.
Optional safety features are abundant, and the ones available on the base trim come standard on the 2.0T trim and include features like a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, remote door lock control, and Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system. This system offers roadside assistance, crash response, remote door lock control, geo-fencing, curfew limits, and general electronic parameters that parents can set for their teenaged drivers. The Santa Fe Sport is so effective when it comes to safety, that It received a perfect 5-star safety rating overall from the IIHS.
